Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) is widely regarded as the leading landscape artist of Japan's shin-hanga (new prints) movement. Celebrated for his evocative depictions of temples, villages, rivers, and seasonal landscapes, Hasui combined traditional Japanese woodblock printing techniques with a modern sense of atmosphere and light. Over a career spanning four decades, he created more than 600 designs, many inspired by his travels throughout Japan. His masterful use of snow, rain, mist, and moonlight earned him international acclaim, and in 1956 he was designated a Living National Treasure for his contributions to Japanese printmaking. Today, Hasui's works are among the most sought-after and collected Japanese woodblock prints in the world.
