Blending portraiture and prose, Missy Burton creates layered narratives that explore identity, femininity, and community. Her interdisciplinary practice examines lived experience and explores resilience, connection, and self-definition through words and images.
Burton is the author of I Am Woman, Ode to the Female Essence (2021), created to honor the women who shaped her. That same year, she explored identity and wholeness by presenting her augmented-reality series Dynasty: The Peculiar Search for Totality at the African American Museum of Dallas.
Since 2014, her work has appeared in exhibitions and residencies in the US and abroad. Her pieces are held in public and private collections. She has been featured in Fotoshoot Magazine and fyi50+. Her honors include Fotoshoot Magazine’s Photo of the Year and the 2025 APEX Award for mastery of storytelling in the Dynasty series.
In addition to her studio practice, Burton has curated exhibitions centered on diverse narratives and cultural dialogue. From 2019 to 2022, she owned and directed Msanii HOUS Fine Art in Carrollton, Texas, providing a platform for emerging and established artists. Her work reflects a commitment to artistic production and community engagement.
