McClung almost always painted from life rather than imagination, and this is one of her only known portraits not made from a real-life model, which gives it a distinctly different feeling from the rest of her work. The dark, atmospheric palette, the loose handling of paint, and the closed, dreamlike expression of the figure suggest something more inward and emotionally suggestive than her usual observational portraits. It is an unusual piece in McClung's body of work, offering a rare glimpse into what she could create when working purely from her own mind rather than from a sitter in front of her.
