Adaptation
Adaptation came about because I had to change the way I paint. Somewhere along the way, that became interesting.
As my physical limitations changed, so did my methodology. I changed tools, altered the way I move around a canvas and started bringing more of what was already around me into the work.
Studio residue has become part of that. Dried tea leaves, stitched tea bags, coffee grounds and fragments from the palette are embedded into the surface alongside repeated marks and layers. Some of it lands exactly where I expect. Some of it has other ideas. I like that.
These materials bring something to the canvas that paint alone can’t. They interrupt the marks, create unexpected texture and organically introduce moments of chaos into a process that can otherwise become quite deliberate.
Adaptation is still evolving. I suspect that’s rather the point.
