Melissa’s artistic journey began in childhood, where her creativity was nurtured by her family and inspiring art educators. Although she continued studying art in college, a deep sense of service led her to pursue a commission and career as an officer in the United States Air Force. During this distinguished military career spanning more than two decades, the demands of leadership left little time to pursue her artistic passion. Upon retiring in 2012, she devoted herself fully to creating art, embracing the calling that had quietly accompanied her throughout her life.

Largely self-taught while continually expanding her knowledge through workshops and formal study, Melissa draws upon the discipline, resilience, and perspective gained through military service to inform her ever-evolving creative process. Although she has explored a wide range of artistic media throughout her career, her primary focus is creating contemporary abstract art, where expressive compositions, layered surfaces, and refined color relationships define her distinctive voice.

While living in Utah from 2013 to 2021, Melissa became an active member of the Ogden Palette Club and the Utah Calligraphic Artists’ Guild, where she both studied and taught. During this period, she exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, received an Honorable Mention at the 2019 Ogden Palette Club Show, earned Third Place in an Eccles Art Center Petite Impressions competition, and was invited to present a solo exhibition at the Eccles Art Center Carriage House in 2020.

Since moving with her family to the mountains of western North Carolina in 2022, Melissa has become an active member in the region’s thriving arts community—one that boasts the highest concentration of artists in the nation. She regularly exhibits through Toe River Arts, participates in the celebrated biannual studio tours, maintains a gallery and studio in her home, and exhibits at local venues in Burnsville. Her work has been featured in the February/March 2024 issue of Asheville Made magazine, she is a member of the Blue Ridge Art Guild, and American Women Artists.

Melissa’s paintings are held in private collections throughout the United States and internationally. She has completed significant commissions, including works for Burnsville’s historic NuWray Hotel. Her largest solo exhibition to date was presented at the Toe River Arts Gallery in Spruce Pine from November 2025 through January 2026.
