Bailey Wick Gallery is pleased to present SMILEY: Lost in My Own Universe, a new exhibition by Canadian artist and filmmaker Matt Smiley at The London West Hollywood.
Moving between neo-expressionism, pop culture and cinematic nostalgia, Smiley explores how memory is constructed through images. Hollywood landmarks, childhood icons, automatic writing and recurring smiley motifs collide across the exhibition—creating a world that is playful on the surface, yet charged with longing, contradiction and emotional history.
At the center of the presentation is the Smiley Soup Can Collection, a limited group of one-of-one works that transforms familiar cultural icons into personal artifacts of collective memory. Together, the works reflect Smiley’s central idea: we do not remember our lives in order; we remember them through fragments, feelings and images.
