"The practice of Marisabel Gonzalez stands as a compelling example of contemporary painting that refuses divisions between the intellectual and the emotional, science and poetry, body and landscape, personal experience and collective memory"

Born in 1973 in Caracas, Venezuela. Resides and works in Sydney, Australia.
Marisabel Gonzalez is a contemporary artist whose work explores the relationship between body, landscape, memory, and transformation.
Drawing on her background as a physician and sonographer, Gonzalez approaches the human body not only as a biological structure, but as a living archive of experience. Her paintings emerge from an ongoing interest in what exists beneath the visible surface: emotional traces, internal landscapes, memory, vulnerability, resilience, and repair.
Her practice is grounded in the idea of the palimpsest, a surface where earlier marks are never fully erased, but remain present beneath new layers. Through stitching, erasure, colour, collage and material intervention, Gonzalez creates paintings and installations that hold traces of time, pressure, and transformation. Each surface becomes a field where the personal and the universal can meet.
In recent work, Gonzalez has increasingly turned to the landscape as a living system. Rather than depicting place in a traditional sense, she treats the land as an active presence that carries memory, energy and history. Her paintings dissolve the boundary between body and landscape, revealing both as layered, sensitive, and continually changing. Colour plays a central role in her practice, where it operates as atmosphere, emotion, and a form of non-verbal language communicating what cannot always be spoken: forces that shape human experience.
Gonzalez’s work invites slow looking and reflection. Her installations are charged with strong conceptual ideas, and her paintings offer spaces of connection between the intimate and the collective, the scientific and the poetic, the visible and the unseen.
