Barbara Stanton is a renowned and internationally celebrated artist specializing in miniature paintings and life drawings (barbarastanton.com). She first enrolled in community college between 1978-1980 at Chabot College’s Valley Campus in Livermore. She took all the art classes she could just for fun, without any intention of obtaining a degree. She had the ambitious plan of becoming a painter and stay-at-home mom, and didn’t believe she needed a formal education for that. During her time, she discovered the joy of life drawing. She took Drawing, Figure, Color Theory & Design, Painting, and Art History. After getting a job in retail, getting married, and having kids, she didn’t paint for about 5 years.

Stanton eventually returned to college between 1990-1991 at what was now Las Positas College and learned Graphic Design and computer skills, which became invaluable resources for supporting herself and her two sons after her divorce. She took Computer Information, Computer Graphics, Drafting, Computer-Aided Drafting, Technical Illustration, and Graphic Design. Throughout her career as a graphic artist, she transitioned to painting miniatures. She remarried a wonderful man who supported her art endeavors, and she started teaching art to both kids and adults and eventually phased out her full-time job to focus solely on painting and teaching. She ran the local figure drawing workshop and even organized an annual figure exhibition called, “The Essential Figure.” Retired from teaching, she continues to paint, run the figure drawing workshop, and actively engage in the local arts community.
