Biography
I was born in Tromsø in 1966. I moved to the Eastern part of Norway in 1986, and after 22 years in Sarpsborg, I relocated to Moss in 2018. As a painter, I would describe myself as intuitiv. I start by selecting colors based on complementary pairs, and then gradually develop the result. It often leads to the creation of some imaginary figures. When I photograph, my focus is on nature, such as flowers, trees, water, or buildings.
Experience
At an early age, I developed an interest in painting through my father and I have been painting and doing photography as a hobby for approximately 25 years. From the ages of 13 to 18 I worked during the Festspillene i Nord-Norge (Festival of North Norway) in a department that featured art exhibitions, collaborating with many artists. Although during those years my responsibilities mainly involved activities for children. This experience led me to pursue a two-year cultural education program that focused on organizing exhibitions, art history, and more. After those two years I decided to continue my studies in pedagogy (cand.paed) at the University in Oslo. Moss art assocation, selection committee and assistant mediator
From start to finish - my process
Through my professional education in pedagogy, I have learned that communication can be expressed both verbally and non-verbally, and for me, visual art is a separate form of communication. I have taken this insight into my artistic work, where I visualize life's many phases with textured, opaque and transparent surfaces, different color combinations - and values and defined lines and shapes.
Finally, worn surfaces are polished and/or scraped away. In this combination, I experience that an exciting dynamic arises between the life lived and the time to come, and this is an expression of a need for a balance between what is planned and what cannot be planned in life. And, not least, such a work process contributes to pictorial surfaces that can contribute to different interpretations by the viewer.
In other words, visual art has become a form of language that expresses my life experiences and the process can start with:
- intuitive sketching of shapes that catch my attention
- reflection on phenomena that have significance in my life or
- values that have created a curiosity
I further abstract "what I see" so that the expression becomes mine. When I have "landed" on the main element/shapes, I spend a lot of time exploring the choice of main colors, composition, mood, preparation of several sketches, paper models, before working on larger sketches begins. I often start with one or two colors and their value scale and the remaining color choices are made along the way to create a whole.
I have previously preferred and experienced it as most energizing to create pictorial surfaces in large formats versus small formats. After participating in the exhibition "Little treasures" (2025) where you create four images in the 20:20 format, I have, with a good portion of patience and sufficient time, discovered the joy of working on exciting image surfaces in small formats.
