This painting came out of building up a heavily worked surface, using mediums to create depth and resistance. I was testing how far I could push that language toward a larger scale. It struggled for a long time. The surface felt dense, almost closed off. Then one move shifted everything and I could see where it needed to go. What remains holds that tension between buildup and release, where the painting opens just enough to reveal its future.
