The artistic journey of Michał Antoni Leszczyński (Michael Lester) began with a focus on maritime and landscape subjects. As one of the pioneering master mariners of Poland’s Second Republic during the 1920s and 1930s, Lester balanced his time between navigating international shipping lanes and serving as a port pilot in the burgeoning Baltic coast harbor of Gdynia. His mastery of the sea defined this formative chapter of his life, while simultaneously establishing his prowess as a maritime artist.
While traversing the globe, Lester’s prolific output endeared him to fellow crewmen, for whom he often rendered portraits or scenes of their journeys. During this period, he achieved significant early success, establishing a gallery in Warsaw and exhibiting his works across cultural capitals such as Paris, Brussels, and London. These early years solidified his reputation as an artist of international standing.
The outbreak of World War II in 1939 marked a tragic turning point. With Poland under Nazi occupation, Lester found himself effectively exiled in Belgium, his Warsaw gallery and life’s work destroyed by bombardment. Seeking refuge in Britain, he dedicated his expertise to the Polish Mercantile Fleet in Exile and, following the war, continued his maritime service within the Royal Fleet Auxiliary as a naturalized British citizen.
Throughout the conflict, Lester remained a devoted chronicler of his experiences, capturing his seaborne life in the extensive works on paper featured in this collection. While post-war Europe offered employment, it lacked the creative spark he craved. It was while serving as first-mate on a bauxite transport ship between Alabama and Jamaica that he discovered his true muse, leading him to settle in Montego Bay in the early 1950s and embrace life as a full-time artist.
This relocation ignited what Lester termed a "personal renaissance." His work underwent a dramatic stylistic shift, characterized by a vibrant color palette, bold lines, and sophisticated compositions, mostly evident in his oil paintings. However, this collection of works on paper reveals this process to the public for the first time. Spanning from the 1930s to the 1970s, these pieces offer a definitive look at the enduring genius and intrepid spirit of a singular talent.
