Lauretta Crites is an American textile artist living and working in Porto, Portugal. She creates representational wall works using fabric and machine stitching, often incorporating paint, ink, or colored pencil.
Before focusing fully on her fine art practice, Crites spent more than a decade in costume production with the Los Angeles Opera, first as a costume assistant and later as Assistant Costume Director. She holds a BFA in Production and Design Technology, with an emphasis in Costume Design, from California Institute of the Arts. Her theater background informs the way she works with materials and construction, as well as the quiet theatricality she finds in everyday life.
Crites' work has been exhibited in the United States and Europe, including at the Texas Quilt Museum, Visions Museum of Textile Art, International Quilt Festival Houston, and Road to California. Her work has appeared in Art Quilting Studio, Catch Light Magazine, and Quilting Arts Magazine, and on Quilting Arts TV.
Now based in Porto, her 2026 solo exhibition Transplanted reflected themes of relocation, transition, and belonging, influenced by her own move from the United States to Portugal.
