Woolly Bugger
Few flies have achieved the legendary status of the Woolly Bugger. Simple, versatile, and effective, it has introduced generations of anglers to the excitement of a fish taking a fly.
This original 3.5 × 2.5 inch watercolor is my interpretation of that familiar pattern. Instead of focusing on exact proportions, I wanted to capture its energy—the flowing marabou tail, the suggestion of hackle fibers, and the subtle flash that brings the fly to life underwater. Loose watercolor washes and scattered speckles create the feeling of movement while metallic accents echo the sparkle of the fly itself.
Framed in a 4 × 5 inch frame, this small original is equally at home on a desk, bookshelf, or among a collection of fly-fishing art. It is a tribute to a pattern whose beauty lies not only in its appearance, but in the memories it has created for anglers around the world.
