A close look at a grayling reveals colors easily missed at first glance. Turquoise, violet, gold, green and orange circle the eye and move across the fish's silvery skin. Inspired by a macro photograph by Dave Hanson, this watercolor explores the extraordinary beauty hidden in the smallest details of an ordinary fish.
Rather than reproducing every scale and marking, I allowed the colors and reflections to tell the story—until it seemed the grayling carried an entire rainbow within its eye.
