This piece is part of a collection explores catalytic formation, duality, expansion and contraction, texture, contrast, how we establish value in objects, and an obsession with shiny things. The series is inspired by and references the geological, organic, and cosmic. Each piece is reflective, made with india ink as well as metallic inks and acrylic paints, changing in the light as if dimensional. Yupo is a 100% plastic surface.
This series of work sprang from a need for solidity in a time of upheaval and change during my move from New York City to Vancouver, BC. I left a place full of concrete and rough exteriors for one full of water, wood, and fresh, wet, air. Though the cut out forms seem to have some solidity and weight, the individual painted strata of each piece hints at fluidity beneath the surface, a moment of flux captured. Rainbows are temporal, moments of brightness, nothing to hang onto, but I wanted to interpret something fleeting as something solid and lasting. Acrylic and ink on yupo, varied sizes. 2018. $400 CAD each.
