Frank, the Maiden imagines Frank dressed in medieval courtly fashion, complete with a flowing head covering. The outfit suggests a proper and respectable member of the royal court—but Frank has never been particularly interested in being proper. With flesh-covered hands that reveal the bones underneath, Frank gazes dreamily off to the side at something—or perhaps someone—just out of view. Is it a handsome knight? A forbidden love? The royal baker carrying a fresh pie? We may never know. The combination of elegant courtly dress, a dreamy expression, and Frank’s unmistakable skeleton creates a playful take on the romantic portraits of the medieval court. Frank may look like a proper maiden, but that mischievous glint suggests there’s probably more going on than meets the eye. After all, even the dead can have a little crush.
