Textile mixed media artworks created by Janet Herman include original fabric paintings. I use my hands to move the quilt batting and fabric painting bundle under a fast moving sewing machine needle, drawing detail and sculpting dimension in the thickness; working from the center out to the edges.
My goal is to elevate the fabric painting, not create a quilt. In the process, I use dozens of thread colors; manually changing each color, as needed. Finished pieces are stretch mounted over mounting boards or gallery canvas and typically framed.
