The Muddy Waters series draws its inspiration from the muddy, meandering waters of Louisiana—where movement is constant, subtle, and deeply rooted in memory. These abstract works are my visual response to that landscape, where the heavy silty water is both life-giver and storyteller, carving through soil with grace and power.
Using layered applications of pigment, gestural linework, and fluid washes, I sought to echo the rhythm of the river: how it pulses through bayous and backwaters, how it stains and softens, how it never truly stops moving. Earth tones reference the dense sediment and red clay, while the sharp contrast of blue and black evoke sky, shadow, and the depth beneath the surface. In this body of work, abstraction becomes a way to remember water—not just how it looks, but how it feels.
Each piece in this series is sold with an 8" black frame with a 2" mat. Domestic shipping is included.
Muddy Waters 4 is the final piece in the series. It suggests a rising mist after rain, where muddy ground meets open sky.
The black swirling shapes suggest organisms that exist in the shadows and shoulder their way out of the mud to scurry along the damp edges of the waterways, while pale blues drift upward like humidity breaking into air. The composition holds a meditative quiet, offering space for the river to breathe—perhaps after the storm, perhaps just before the next bend.
