WHAT WE WANT: Juan Jackson by George Roberts

Juan is a life-longs Northsider. I had the pleasure and honor of teaching him literature and writing at North Community High School. He was a dedicated student and learner, one of my favorites. After college, Juan returned to this community to practice in in his chosen field of health care and concern. He is currently Chair of the Northpoint Health and Wellness Clinic board of directors.

The North Minneapolis WHAT WE WANT project, inspired by the work of artist Anna Devere Smith, is intended to plant more positive images of what we Northsiders are like in the minds of those in other communities who regard us as a "troubled" community. I begin by asking my friends and neighbors, or sometimes someone who walks by our gallery and ask, “What is this place?” what they want. Usually the first-thought answers are something like "Win the lottery," or "A Mercedes Benz." Once I amend the question to ask, "What do you want for our community?" a different kind of answer emerges. We take that thought and roll it around in our minds and hearts, looking for the best way to express the idea. And... I always try for a little poetry as, we, jointly, create the final text. Finally, I design and print the broadside, subject to the approval of the contributor, of course.

One broadside from this edition given to the community parameter who contributed the quote; four held for sale to recover printing expenses. The remainder of the edition to be given free to local businesses who agree to display the piece in their store windows for at least 30 days.
