Since immigrating to Canada I have been aware of a split in my sense of belonging which I perceive as both painful and enriching. No longer completely rooted in any culture can be lonely at times. Concurrently it can produce precisely the feeling of liberation I have been seeking when I left Germany 25 years ago. “Baggage” reflects on questions of social and familial constraints as a result of inter-generational as well as collective trauma and guilt, asking if the act of physical relocation to a new and far away culture can bring the desired freedom.
