"At the Crest of Erstagatan”
Ersta diakoni’s first hospital was located on Kungsholmen and opened its doors in 1851. It held twelve patients, divided between two rooms, and also housed the training of deaconesses and nurses — professions that, at the time, were understood as one and the same: the calling of the Christian nurse.
As the need for healthcare grew, and as the organisation expanded its work, the premises soon became too small. The move to new quarters took place by barge, carried across the water to Södermalm, and in 1863 the community began to settle into the site where Ersta diakoni’s head-quarter resides today.
Here on the cliffside, the land was cultivated and fruit trees flourished, and amid this landscape a hospital was raised — modern and forward-looking for its time. But around the turn of the twentieth century, even these facilities proved insufficient. The hospital building you see in the photograph was then constructed, becoming Ersta diakoni’s third hospital, designed by the architect Axel Kumlien.
The new hospital opened in 1907 and offered men’s and women’s general wards, smaller patient rooms as well as a few single rooms, along with a kitchen, baths, a sauna, a children’s ward, an outpatient-clinic and an operating theatre.
The nurses and doctors lived nearby, for example in the yellow building that today forms part of the reception area in the new Ersta Hospital. A footbridge once connected their living quarters to the hospital entrance — which then faced the garden — allowing them to reach the wards without climbing the steep hill.
