劉其偉的藝術貢獻在於1954年起，引進西方繪畫技巧、理論等譯作入台灣，1959年與張杰、吳廷標、香洪、胡茄等人組成引領水彩藝術發展的「中國水彩畫會」，1963年榮獲中國畫學會第一屆「最優水彩畫家」金爵獎。兩年後，卻因越戰爆發，人人暱稱「其老」（豈老）的他，開始出發探險生涯首站，中南半島占婆、吉蔑、暹邏等古文明，注入劉其偉原始藝術創作、研究中，從此即無法斬斷對全世界原始文化、人類學領域的親臨追求。
二十世紀初之表現主義大師：高更、馬諦斯、畢卡索、克利、康丁斯基、亨利摩爾所發展的原始主義 ( primitivism) 撼動人心，劉其偉堪稱是此一潮流的最佳實踐者！六十一歲著作「菲（律賓）島原始文化與藝術」，獲得該國國家藝術委員會頒贈「東亞藝術文化著作榮譽獎」；七十歲深入婆羅洲熱帶雨林、八十二歲組探險隊再入巴布亞紐幾內亞，復及非洲和中南美洲；畢生著作等身。
劉其偉擅長以半抽象形式，透過想像將現實世界簡化、變形，幻化成原始純真的神秘世界，作品多人物、動植物、與文化保存、生態保護之意念呈現。其繪畫風格，經研究為：具有裝飾、融合、和諧、幽默等特性；劉其偉一生之「野性哲學」蘊含著：掙脫顛沛、困苦生活經驗後的重生，堅持童真無念的開懷，是以他從不介意無傳統學院繪畫背景，換以優秀的日、英語言、理工專業養成，全新奠基、不朽於東方藝壇。
經歷
1912 出生 八月二十五日出生於福建省福州市，本名劉福盛。祖籍廣東省中山縣。
1917 6歲 受第一次世界大戰影響，劉家經營的茶葉出口生意滯銷，宣告破產。
1918 7歲 祖父因債務沉重，抑鬱而終，父親為躲避債主，舉家遷回廣東，靠變賣古董維生。
1920 9歲 隨父親、祖母、姊姊移居日本橫濱。
1921 10歲 改名劉其偉
1923 12歲 九月日本關東大地震，劉家在大地震中無人傷亡，但家產全無。
1926 15歲 進入神戶英語神學校就讀。
1932 21歲 以華僑身分考取庚子賠款公費生，離家赴東京，進入日本官立東京鐵道局教習所專門部電機科就讀。
1935 24歲 七月日日本返回中國。應徵進入天津公大紗廠任職，但因與日籍主管發生口角遭開除。
1937 26歲 七月爆發盧溝橋事變。十月應聘至廣州中山大學電機工程系擔任助教。寫了生平第一篇稿。
1938 27歲 與杭州姑娘顧慧貞結婚。
1939 28歲 第二次世界大戰正式爆發，隨學校遷往雲南。
1940 29歲 辭去中大教職，進入軍政布兵工署擔任技術員，出入滇緬邊境，初識中國少數民族引發研究人類學的興趣。
1941 30歲 長子劉怡孫出生
1945 34歲 第二次世界大戰結束。調任經濟部資源委員會研究員，十二月來台從事戰後接收及修護工程。
1946 35歲 任台電公司八斗子發電廠工程師。半年後，調任台灣金銅礦籌備處工程師兼工程組機電土木課課長。全家遷居金瓜石。
1947 36歲 二二八事變，倖免於難。次子劉寧生出世。
1948 37歲 轉任台糖公司電力組工程師，遷居台北汀洲路。
1949 38歲 五月台灣省實施戒嚴。十二月中央政府遷台。到中山堂觀賞香洪畫展之後，發奮自習繪畫，首次公開水彩作品「榻榻米上熟睡的小兒子」。
1950 39歲 以「寂殿斜陽」入選第五屆全省美展。
1951 40歲 於台北中山堂舉辦首展「劉其偉水彩畫展」。
1954 43歲 第一本譯作「水彩畫法」出版。
1957 46歲 離開台糖公司，轉任美國海軍駐台新竹空軍機場。
1958 47歲 轉任國防部軍事工程局工程師。
1959 48歲 與張杰、吳廷標、香洪、胡茄等人籌組「聯合水彩畫會」。
1961 50歲 成立「歐亞出版社」，專事出版美術書籍。
1963 52歲 榮獲中國畫學會頒贈第一屆最優水彩畫家金爵獎。

1965 54歲 七月赴越南戰地，擔任美軍機場軍事工程設計，並踏查占婆、吳哥窟古文明藝術，完成「中南半島一頁史詩」系列繪畫。
1967 56歲 自越南返台，回國防部軍工局任職。七月於國立歷史博物館推出「越南戰地風物水彩畫展」，出版『中南半島行腳畫集』。
1968 57歲 轉任聯勤工程署設計組工程師。
1969 58歲 榮獲第四屆「中山文藝創作獎」。『樂於藝』出版。
1971 60歲 辭去聯勤工程署設計組工程師職務，告別公職生涯，全心投入藝術創作。成立「中國藝術學苑」，任班主任。
1972 61歲 赴菲律賓考察藝術教育及古代繪畫遺跡，走訪Bontoc山區進行土著文化田野調查。開始編纂『東南亞物質文化圖誌』。
1973 62歲 『菲島文化與藝術』獲菲律賓國家藝術文化委員會頒贈『東南亞藝術文化著作』榮譽獎，及受聘為香港東南亞研究所名譽研究員。
1974 63歲 至中原理工學院建築系任教。『藝術零縑』出版。
1975 64歲 編撰之『現代水彩初階』出版。
1976 65歲 參加韓國漢城「首屆亞洲藝術家會議」並蒐集朝鮮半島古藝術與建築等資料。編譯『近代建築藝術源流』、譯作『非洲行獵記』出版。
1977 66歲 赴屏東霧台、好茶、來義遺址，進行排灣族文化及板岩屋的考察與測繪。編著『原始藝術探究』、編譯『荷馬水彩專輯』出版。
1978 67歲 赴中南半島採訪馬雅、西斯底卡、印加古文明及叢林印地安文化。『朝鮮半島美術初探－韓國古典美術』『水彩技巧與創作』出版。
1979 68歲 赴花蓮陶塞溪畔採訪泰雅族部落。
1980 69歲 赴蘭嶼田野調查。受聘擔任美國俄亥俄州立大學藝術系訪問藝術家。『台灣土著文化藝術』、編著『現代水彩講座』、譯作『英國水彩畫大師佛林特水彩特集』出版。
1981 70歲 八月赴婆羅洲沙勞越拉讓江（Rajang）流域雨林採訪，並前往拉可（Rako）野生動物保護區拍攝人猿生態並採集昆蟲標本。
1982 71歲 受聘擔任新加坡南洋美術學院客座教授。『蘭嶼部落文化藝術』出版。
1983 72歲 獲頒全國畫學會繪畫教育類金爵獎。台北市立美術館落成，受聘為諮詢委員。『婆羅洲雨林探險記－原始部落文化藝術』出版。
1984 73歲 擔任東海大學美術系兼任教授。赴高雄縣茂林鄉萬山村考察岩雕。七月前往南非採訪，並蒐集原始藝術資料。
1985 74歲 赴馬來西亞中央藝術學院講學。深入婆羅周拉讓江流域，採訪遊居於內陸叢林的原始部落。
1986 75歲 組探險隊，再度前往北婆羅洲之沙巴。
1987 76歲 七月十六日台灣地區解除戒嚴。受聘擔任輔仁大學兼任教授。
1988 77歲 台灣省立美術館開館。畫作義賣所得捐贈伊甸殘障福利基金會。捐贈原始民族文物給中央研究院民族學研究所。『走進叢林』出版。
1990 79歲 台灣省立美術館舉行「劉其偉創作四十年回顧展」，並捐贈九件作品。『台灣水牛集』、『婆羅洲土著文化藝術』出版。
1991 80歲 作品捐贈台灣省立美術館，獲頒「台灣省政府一等獎狀」。捐贈十幅作品給台北市立美術館。編譯『文化人類學』出版。
1992 81歲 十月台北市立美術館舉行「劉其偉作品展」，並捐贈十二幅作品。赴東非肯亞探索原始部落文化和野生動物保育。捐贈一千多冊圖書給東海大學。『藝術人類學出版』。
1993 82歲 三月接受台灣省美術基金會委託，組隊前往大洋洲，進行「巴布亞紐幾內亞石器文物採集研究計劃」，蒐得文物轉贈國立自然科學博物館。九月受聘擔任國立台北藝術大學傳統藝術研究所兼任教授。十一月應農委會之邀請繪製保護野生動物海報。『巴布亞紐幾內亞行腳』出版。
1994 83歲 六月高雄市立美術館開館。國立自然科學博物館展出「巴布亞原始藝術－劉其偉的新幾內亞行」。馬來西亞中央藝術學院設立「大馬中央藝術學院劉其偉藝術獎學金」。『美拉尼西亞文化藝術』出版。
1995 84歲 出任「中華自然資源保育協會」常務監事，倡導生態保育，『野生動物－上帝的劇本』、『台灣原住民文化藝術』出版。
1996 85歲 於台北市立美術館舉辦「劉其偉保護野生動物畫展」。『文化探險－業餘人類學初階』出版。
1997 86歲 捐贈作品給高雄市立美術館。八月受聘擔任玉山、雪霸、金門國家公園榮譽警察。榮獲中國美術學會頒贈「當代美術創作成就獎」。「劉其尾巴布亞新幾內亞紀行」錄影帶，獲第一屆金鹿獎四大獎項。
1998 87歲 前往所羅門群島及婆羅洲沙勞越，採集當地原始文化藝術資料。
1999 88歲 「九二一重生義賣」活動召集人，捐贈畫作贊助器官捐贈學會、兒童癌症基金會、世界展望會、中華社會福利聯合勸募協會。
2000 89歲 捐贈百幅畫作予國立台灣美術館。
2001 90歲 六月獲陳水扁總統頒發文建會第四屆「文馨獎」。出版『藝術人類學』。
2002 91歲 四月十三日因心臟病病逝。遺作『性崇拜與文學藝術』出版。
2003 ------ 劉其偉逝世一週年，首都藝術中心於國立國父紀念館中山國家畫廊舉行「劉其偉逝世週年紀念展」。
2004 ------ 首都藝術中心全省巡迴展出國寶級的藝術響宴 ~「劉其偉紀念展」，並與廣達基金會合作「遊於藝--藝術頑童劉其偉探索天地」系列校園巡迴展。

Liu Qiwei, an old urchin in the art world who has collected "science and art", "modern and primitive", "sensibility and reason" in his life, said when he was 90 years old: I want to live another 90 years! 2004 ------ Capital Art Center's provincial tour exhibited a national treasure-level art feast ~ "Liu Qiwei Memorial Exhibition", and cooperated with Quanta Foundation "Amusement in Art-Art Urchin Liu Qiwei Explores the World" series campus tour exhibition.
On 4/28-6/8, the Capital Art Center exhibited "Three Exhibitions of Stars, Moon, and Sun Time and Space by Liu Qiwei, Yang Yingfeng, and Xu Bihua" in Hall A9 of Shinkong Mitsukoshi. In October, it donated a group of African cultural wood carvings to the National Taiwan Museum of Prehistory.

5/7-5/9 Taipei Art Fair, Capital Art Center played Liu Qiwei's animation on the spot, which was welcomed by friends of all ages.

2/18-2/22 Yushan National Park cooperated with Liu Qiwei's Art and Literature Teaching Association to exhibit Liu Qiwei's painting "The Call of the Wild, God's Masterpiece; Liu Qiwei Ecological Conservation Painting Special Exhibition" at the Yushan Park Shuili Visitor Center.
In April, the Capital Art Center held an exhibition on the fifth anniversary of Liu Qiwei's death and released a memorial album.
