Curatorial Statement
"Dasagriva: The Ten Faces of Humanity" is a thought-provoking art series that explores the complexities of human nature through the symbolism of Ravana's ten heads. Each head represents a distinct aspect of human emotions and experiences, drawing parallels between Hindu and Christian philosophies.

 

1. Matsarya (Envy): A commentary on the destructive power of jealousy and competition.

2. Kama (Lust): An exploration of the human desire and its consequences.

3. Krodha (Wrath): A depiction of the destructive force of anger and aggression.

4. Moha (Delusional Attachment): A representation of the confusion and ignorance that can lead to chaos.

5. Lobha (Greed): A critique of the insatiable desire for wealth and power.

6. Mada (Pride): An examination of the dangers of arrogance and self-importance.

7. Manas (Mind): A celebration of the power of the mind and its potential for growth.

8. Buddhi (Intellect): A representation of the discerning faculty that guides human decision-making.

9. Chitta (Will): An exploration of the human spirit and its capacity for determination.

10. Ahamkara (Ego): A commentary on the role of the ego in shaping human identity.
Seven of them are also described as Cardinal Sins or Capital Vices in Christianity. The Catechism of the Catholic Church also refers to these sins as “capital sins” and explains why they are the most dangerous. “Vices can be classified according to the virtues they oppose, or also be linked to capital sins which Christian experience has distinguished, following St. John Cassian and St. Gregory the Great. They are called “capital” because they engender other sins, other vices. They are pride, avarice [greed], envy, wrath, lust, gluttony and sloth” (No. 1866). 

 

The series employs a diverse range of mediums and styles, from traditional to contemporary mixed media - paper/fabric/fibre/glass pieces/mesh, to convey the complexity and depth of human emotions through the eye. Each artwork invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences and the universal themes that connect us all.

"Dasagriva: The Ten Faces of Humanity" offers a profound exploration of the human condition, encouraging viewers to engage with the complexities of their own emotions and experiences.

Distance is something we all live with. It shapes how we love, how we remember, how we grow. It exists between people, between past and present, between what we long for and what we hold. In this exhibition, distance is not treated as emptiness or loss. It is approached as structure, as the invisible framework that allows connection to exist at all.

Across twenty textured, architectonic abstractions, Dipayan Ghosh explores distance in four intertwined ways: cosmic, temporal, relational, and cartographic. The works move from celestial orbits and gravitational tensions to the slow sediment of time, from emotional fissures between figures to layered maps of migration and memory. Each painting becomes a terrain where separation is measured, negotiated, and made visible. The Sanskrit titles deepen this inquiry. They are not ornamental but conceptual anchors, drawing from a language that understands space as ākāśa, a living field where absence and presence coexist.

Themes
At its core, the exhibition asks a simple yet urgent question: what does distance actually do to us? These works consider the distance between bodies, between generations, between longing and fulfilment, between centre and periphery. Some distances are cosmic and immense. Others are intimate and almost invisible. Together they form a quiet atlas of human experience, reminding us that separation is often the condition that makes growth, harmony, and meaning possible.

Artistic Approach
Ghosh works through dense materiality. Cement, sand, fibre, acrylic, oil sticks and pigment are layered, fractured, carved and sanded back. Cubist geometry meets expressionist gesture. Surfaces feel built rather than painted, as though excavated from memory or time. Grids intersect with orbits, fissures interrupt planes, voids anchor movement. The process mirrors the concept itself. Distance is etched into the surface through rupture, layering and recalibration. What appears abstract reveals itself as deeply architectural.

Curatorial Goals
This exhibition invites viewers to slow down and inhabit the spaces between forms. It encourages reflection rather than spectacle. By making distance visible, the works aim to shift how we perceive separation in our own lives. Not as failure or loss, but as a necessary interval that allows relationships, identities and systems to breathe. The hope is that viewers leave with a heightened sensitivity to balance, to patience, to the fragile structures that hold us together even when we stand apart.

Through a diverse range of artistic expressions, this collection invites viewers to contemplate the intricate relationships between individual and collective endurance, and the various challenges that test our limits.

 

The artworks on display navigate the complexities of mental health, environmental degradation, war, and the weight of burdens and responsibilities. By employing abstraction, I have distilled the essence of these issues, revealing the emotional, psychological, and philosophical underpinnings that shape our experiences.
