From the moment “others” stepped onto this land and claimed it as their own, inequity was embedded into its foundation. This work confronts the long history of broken promises — treaties ignored, emancipation undermined, immigration distorted, and the failure to protect all who call this place home. The white hand presses down, not as an accident, but as a symbol of systemic power — crushing hope, opportunity, and human dignity. In contrast, the rich colors and layered fibers radiate life. They represent the diverse peoples whose cultures, labor, and resilience have shaped this nation. Their vibrancy endures, even under pressure. Beauty persists. Contribution continues. But the weight is real.
