Mersuka Dopazo is a Spanish artist who creates large-scale, vibrant, fabric collage paintings. Her work often explores the balance of color and the relationship between positive and negative space. Dopazo's collages are made from a variety of materials, including couture fabric, hand-made papers, pigment, white canvas, and gestural line, which she sources from all over the world.
Dopazo was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1971 and studied law at university, but eventually left the legal field to pursue art. She was inspired to work in textiles after visiting Benares, India, where she saw women washing their saris in the river and laying them out to dry. She regularly returns to India to teach art to schoolchildren and has incorporated drawings from local children into her work.
