Floreana Island, also known as Santa María or Charles Island, is one of the most historically rich, ecologically significant, and romantically mysterious islands in the Galápagos archipelago, lying in the southern part of the island chain and covering approximately 173 square kilometers of dramatically varied terrain. It holds the distinction of being one of the first islands in the Galápagos to be permanently settled by humans, and its history is steeped in fascinating and at times darkly intriguing tales — from the buccaneers and whalers of the 17th and 18th centuries who used it as a provisioning stop, harvesting the island's giant tortoises for food, to the eccentric German settlers of the 1930s whose mysterious disappearances and interpersonal dramas on the island captured international headlines and remain one of the great unsolved mysteries of the Pacific. The island's most famous landmark is Post Office Bay, a tradition dating back to the late 18th century where sailors would leave letters in a barrel to be carried home by passing ships — a custom that continues to this day as a beloved tourist tradition. Floreana's landscape is strikingly beautiful and diverse, ranging from its black sandy and white sandy beaches along the coast — including the stunning Punta Cormorant, where flamingos wade elegantly in a brackish lagoon — to its lush, green highlands blanketed in dense vegetation and shrouded in mist. The island is also a critically important nesting site for green sea turtles, which haul themselves onto its beaches under cover of darkness, and its surrounding waters are rich in marine life, offering exceptional snorkeling and diving experiences. Tragically, Floreana is also the somber home of one of the most poignant conservation stories in the Galápagos, as its endemic giant tortoise subspecies was driven to extinction in the wild, though ambitious restoration programs using tortoises carrying Floreana tortoise ancestry have offered a remarkable glimmer of hope for the eventual return of this lost giant to its ancestral home.
