The Black-Eyed Susan (*Rudbeckia hirta*) is a cheerful, sun-loving wildflower native to North America, instantly recognizable by its bright golden-yellow petals (technically ray florets) that radiate outward from a prominent, dome-shaped dark brown or black center disc — the "black eye" that gives it its name. It typically grows 1 to 3 feet tall on sturdy, slightly hairy stems with lance-shaped, rough-textured leaves, and blooms prolifically from early summer through fall. A member of the daisy family (Asteraceae), it thrives in prairies, meadows, roadsides, and gardens, attracting butterflies, bees, and other pollinators with ease. It is incredibly hardy and low-maintenance, tolerating drought, poor soils, and full sun, which makes it a favorite among gardeners and a beloved symbol of the American landscape — it is even the state flower of Maryland.
