Artist David Mills, founder of the Prairie Project draws his inspiration for the series from his travels across Texas and the Southwest. Each painting is usually completed in one sitting en plein air on location or at farmers markets and art fairs from photographs. He paints using oil impasto with (mostly) palette knives. This technique gives the work richness and body and forces austerity on the subject. The Prairie Project is tough and rugged, simple and hearty. Just like farmers. Just like America.
