Liminal. Intuitive. Sensory. Passionate. Material handler. Curious de/constructor. Visual thinker. Lifelong learner. Detail collector. Connector. Meaning maker... The image-drenched emotions dancing behind my eyes, reverberating in my bones, are rarely accurately constructable—but the inspiration to do is a practice which drives each day. What ends up on the table, floor, stage, computer screen... is simply the end of a journey which started with provocation (even dissatisfaction) concerning all of what exists in the world around. Research, play, musing, slowly gathering materials, and skill-learning along the way, I assemble meaning into the project so I can make sense of my own place in the worlds it's connected to.
Having wrestled with acute, persistent suicidal ideation since a young age, multiple experiences of not belonging (even within communities one should always be chosen by), and being a person who leans into questions and new perspective over misunderstanding or dissociation, the creative process is not only about making meaning in an essential way, but is a survival tactic in itself.
It seems to me we're jumping beans here on Earth, bouncing into one another and bouncing away, in order to truly take in more than one could possibly figure out alone. Wired for co-regulation; wired for storytelling; wired for whispered processing amongst core confidants (or strangers); wired for education: we find things we never knew were even there to find a moment before. In this way, the world becomes bigger, brighter, more dynamic, and (ultimately) safer for us all.
I believe in community as much as I believe in periods of withdrawal. Cycles (new materials, varied mediums, developing methods, experimental walks) are how we learn to utilize and grow this one specific voice each of us has to command. The body is the only thing we actually own in a lifetime, and art seems a perfect investment for tuning, developing, and playing out that legacy thoroughly.
I raise my glass to: never being tomorrow the same person who woke up today. Each cycle offers new images and ideas, new experiences and feelings, in order that one foot can continue to move in front of the other.
