Wonderland Below centers around a dark almost black interior field surrounded by bright yellow teal dark purple orange blue and magenta. The color gathers around the edges and corners creating the feeling of an opening or drop beneath the surface rather than a flat painted center. The title connects to the way the darker area reads like a rabbit-hole-like depth with the surrounding color acting as the strange world at the rim. Instead of the color being swallowed by the dark the painting feels as though the dark center is being held in place by the brighter movement around it. The result is an abstract painting with a strong sense of pull contrast and contained depth. Its brighter passages keep the piece active and vivid while the black center gives it weight mystery and a downward visual pull.
