Personality
Doesn’t ask for attention. Keeps it anyway.
Let Them Stare has the kind of presence that makes looking feel almost unavoidable. It is dark, composed, and completely comfortable being watched. What began as support for something else ended up refusing to stay in the background.
Description
Let Them Stare was originally created to serve as the background for the gay couple in the Between Bodies Collection. But once the surface was finished, the painting had developed too much presence of its own to disappear behind the figures.
Fine linear texture radiates across a field of charcoal, black, and deep muted violet, pulling the eye toward a concentrated point at the right side of the canvas. Over that movement, broad sweeping bands curve through the composition like something cutting across a current. The contrast between the tightly worked plaster texture and the darker, smoother forms gives the piece a sense of tension without making it feel chaotic.
That shift in purpose became part of the work itself. It was made to hold something else, then proved it did not need anything added to it.
The figures were moved to another background.
Let Them Stare stayed exactly where it was.
