Walter Scott Shinn (1884-1970) was known for his portraits of children and prominent families in New York City during the 1930's to the 1940's, including president Theodore Roosevelt and inventor Thomas Edison. His renowned 1919 portrait of Edison was later selected by the U.S. government for a 3-cent commemorative postage stamp issued in 1947. Today, his gelatin silver prints and photography collections are housed in institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Library of Congress.
