Activist and humanist Joe Schwartz (1913–2013) used photography to document social and economic injustice while emphasizing the dignity, resilience, and humanity of his subjects. A member of the Photo League, he shared its commitment to portraying the lives of working people in urban America. His work is held by major institutions, including the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Getty.
