“The Mist Rises” depicts the Chicken Islands of Georgian Bay, a cluster of wind-scoured granite outcrops where a lone white pine, shaped by decades of exposure to prevailing winds, stands rooted in the exposed bedrock. Cooper returned repeatedly to this stretch of the Bay, drawn to the interplay between the ancient, weathered rock of the Canadian Shield and the persistence of vegetation clinging to it despite the elements. Here, the tree’s windswept form is rendered with dynamic, directional brushwork that echoes the movement of both wind and water, while the surrounding sky is built up in soft, layered strokes suggesting rising mist and shifting atmosphere. The painting reflects Cooper’s ongoing engagement with Georgian Bay as a subject — a landscape he returned to throughout his career for its rugged, sculptural qualities and its embodiment of resilience under harsh natural conditions.
