Painted c. 2006, this work belongs to Cooper’s Dempster Highway series, developed following the artist’s six-week road trip through the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Alaska — a journey that included driving the Dempster Highway, kayaking the Mackenzie River, a drive to Inuvik, and a flight over the glaciers of Kluane National Park. The composition captures a wide, wind-scoured valley where golden tundra slopes funnel toward a distant range of storm-grey peaks, with a band of dark spruce and a glacial river anchoring the foreground as clouds part briefly overhead. Left unsigned by the artist, this painting has been inscribed on the reverse by the estate to confirm authenticity and provenance.
