In this quiet study from Algonquin’s northern reaches, Cooper captures sunlit hills — rendered in warm, luminous oranges and golds — rising above a still lake and dissolving into their own mirrored reflection. A pale band of ripples breaks across the water’s surface, separating land from its reflection, while a cluster of dark evergreens anchors the middle distance, their forms echoed precisely below. In the foreground, sunlit granite boulders break the water’s edge, grounding the composition and drawing the eye back toward the layered hills beyond. The interplay of reflected light and rippled water reflects Cooper’s ongoing fascination with the way Algonquin’s terrain doubles itself across calm water — a recurring motif in his northern landscape work.
