Ceramic artist and designer Carla Roth, originally from Canada, lives and works in Palm Springs, California. She studied graphic design, fine arts, and art history at institutions in British Columbia, Mexico City, and Nova Scotia.
Her ceramic work, primarily slab-built, explores the balance between strength and fragility. Each piece holds space quietly, asking for attention at a human scale. Embracing both chaos and pattern, the works are symbolic reflections of the subconscious.
Roth's work explores the quiet architecture of presence — how form can hold space, suggest stillness, and invite attention inward.
"I am interested in what happens when something recognizable begins to shift into something ambiguous. In both my ceramic work and prints, I am drawn to fragments and movement, allowing individual elements to come together to create a whole. I manipulate forms and surfaces until the components begin to speak to one another. I am also interested in architecture—how forms occupy space, establish relationships, and create a sense of presence. For me, the individual elements are important, but it is the space between them, and the tension and balance they create together, that gives a work its presence."
