Walnut Ink on Museum Board

11.5 x 11.5 in

Signature: This painting is from a series of small works on paper and museum board, that were inspired by conversations I had with my close friend, David Saxe in regards to our shared knowledge of the landscape and geology of the at the edge of the Permian Basin and the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas. The monochromatic character of these water mixable Walnut Ink washes are intended to be reminiscent of the monotoned sepia work of the great American photographer Edward Curtis (1868 - 1952) As native West Texans, both David and I grew up in Midland and shared a love for the beauty and dramatic presence of the mesas in and around the Pecos river valley from south of I -20 to the border of the Rio Grande. Many of these paintings were done as composition studies prior to the pandemic in 2020 for larger original paintings which David wanted to commission for his corner office at Optima Land Services, LLC located on the first floor of the Wilco building in Midland. While the larger commissioned artwork were not realized before David’s untimely passing in March of this year, the spirit of his connection to these paintings and to the West Texas landscape lives on. This series and all subsequent works created in walnut ink on paper are dedicated to the memory of my beloved friend, Midlander, and fellow traveler, David Kavanaugh Saxe (1958-2023) -Baron Wilson 19 July 2023
