"Protecting the Shore" is a captivating 9x12 watercolor and colored pencil artwork on Arches Cold Press Paper that masterfully captures the serene beauty of a coastal landscape. The centerpiece of this charming scene is a lighthouse, situated on the rocky shore to the right side of the composition. Tall and cylindrical, the lighthouse's dark, weathered appearance speaks to its enduring presence even though its light was extinguished decades ago. Adjacent to this stoic structure is a building with a sloped roof, painted in similar dark tones to create a harmonious balance.
The foreground features a grassy area, sparsely dotted with shrubs transitioning into the rocky coastline, adding texture and depth to the scene. On the left, the water is painted in deep blues with gentle waves lapping at the shore, while the sky above is delicately rendered in soft hues of blue and light orange, suggesting the tranquil moments of either sunrise or sunset. Several birds soaring through the sky inject a sense of life and movement into this peaceful setting.
Inspired by the timeless beauty of Wisconsin's historic lighthouses, "Protecting the Shore" is a tribute to these silent sentinels. Although they no longer guide ships to safety, they continue to stand as majestic guardians of the coast, inviting viewers to appreciate their enduring charm day or night. This artwork uniquely combines the delicate textural qualities of watercolor with the precision and vibrancy of colored pencil, resulting in a visually striking and emotionally resonant piece.
