David Frazer graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 1970 with a BFA in painting and received his MA in painting from University of New Mexico in 1976. While at RISD He traveled to Rome as part of the European Honors Program; he would go on to become the chief critic of the RISD/Rome program and professor in residence from 1995 to 1998. Frazer has taught at RISD since 1978 and is now a professor emeritus of the painting department. His paintings combine naturalism with abstraction and are informed by the aesthetics of collage and printing, although they are not actually multimedia works. Early in his career he was inspired by Flemish painting, particularly the frescoes of Giotto and Pierro della Fancesca. Today, he describes his process as beginning with a chaotic laying down of color and shape which he is then challenged to make order out of. He says that his work is influenced by life and the way that contemporary people experience the world. Frazer has exhibited his work internationally and has been a guest artist in South Korea and China.
The painting in Bannister Gallery’s collection, Still Life for Hanger, was acquired from Frazer’s 1985 solo show at the gallery titled Disillusions.
