Jean Julius Sibelius, a Finnish composer born in 1865, is renowned for his seven symphonies which embody the spirit of Finnish nationalism. His most famous work, Finlandia, remains a symbol of resilience and national pride. Sibelius also composed numerous other works, including violin concertos, tone poems, and chamber music. Throughout his life, he was celebrated for his ability to capture the essence of the Finnish landscape and identity whilst also becoming remarkably popular globally. In 1935 The New York Philharmonic surveyed the preferences of music listeners around the United States. When asked who their favourite composer was, Sibelius came first among all of them, living or dead. This degree of recognition during his own lifetime was unequalled in Western music. He was almost 92 when he passed away in 1957, leaving a lasting impact on classical music and cementing his legacy as Finland's greatest composer.
