About the artist

Fung Yuen Hon

b. 1919

Veteran photographer Fung Yuen-hon 馮元侃 is one of Hong Kong's early industrialist. In the late 1930 Fung Yuen-hon got to know senior photographer Choi Chun-sam from Nanjing, Young Wing-yau and Lo Tak-cho of the Flying Eagle Photographic Studio in Pottinger Street, Sit Tze-kong of the international Studio, and S.F. Dan, newly arrived from war-torn China. Fung Yuen-hon was on friendly terms with Wai Kei-chak and Peter Dragon, and would use their facilities to do studio portraits and go on outings with them. On one outing to Sha Tin, Fung Yuen-hon strayed from his companions, and came back with what turned out to be a masterpieces, "Storm Gathering". It won many salon prizes, and the Rolleiflex manufacturer requested a print for their permanent collection.
When S.F. Dan started Studio Le Chic in the China Building, it was with financial assistance from Fung Yuen-hon and Chan Sik-kun. Managed by Pun Yet-pore, the studio flourished. It attracted a great many photography fanatics and generated much interest through competitions, outings and gatherings. So many like-minded people clustered around the studio that they were a cohesive group, albeit without any formal structure. In view of this Lai Shiu-fong, Frank Hsu and Chan Sik-kun proposed that a photographic association be formed, to be named the Chinese Photographic Association of Hong Kong to distinguish it from the Photographic Society of Hong Kong. It was registered in the names of Fung Yuen-hon, Ho Chung-hei and Shum Kung-sik. Before the registration was approved, Fung Yuen-hon was summoned for questioning for over an hour. From these accounts we have a clear understanding of Fung Yuen-hon's contributions to Hong Kong photography.
