Shoji Ueda (1913-2000) was a visionary Japanese photographer celebrated for his whimsical, surrealist compositions staged against the stark landscapes of his native Tottori Prefecture. Eschewing the gritty realism prevalent in post-war Japanese photography, Ueda transformed the Tottori Sand Dunes into a minimalist, open-air theater.
His signature style, often termed "Ueda-cho" (Ueda-style), featured subjects—frequently family members wearing bowler hats or holding umbrellas—arranged like silhouettes in a dreamscape. This playful yet meticulous approach blended Western avant-garde influences with a distinct Japanese sensibility.
Today, Ueda is recognized as one of the most innovative figures in 20th-century photography, leaving behind a legacy of quiet, poetic mystery.
