This painting brings together two places that have shaped me: the wide, open fields of the Midwest and the landscapes I encountered while traveling in Ireland and the UK. During my travels, I was struck by the sight of lone groupings of trees and solitary bushes rising from otherwise empty fields. Many guides referred to these as “Fairy Thorn” bushes, said to be protected and full of mystery. Here, I’ve blended that sense of folklore with the quiet familiarity of Midwestern land and sky. The winding stream, the stillness of the horizon, and the solitary trees carry both memory and myth—inviting the viewer to linger where the everyday world touches something timeless and enchanted.
