Madonna and Child, date unknown from the collection of William B. Adair Art

Madonna and Child, date unknown

Pastel and pencil on paper

22 x 14 in

Irena Wiley produced a number of carved religious sculptures. Her works are in churches in Columbia, Iran and Panama, as well as the U.S. This particular work appears to be a study for a sculpture of the Madonna and child. There seems to be two styles of drawing employed by the artist here - the folds of the drapery are strongly defined, in contrast to the upper body of the Madonna and the form of the baby, which have a much lighter, sketched appearance.

Catholicism was a significant part of the artist's identity. In a number of her letters she makes reference to her faith. Especially important to her was the miracle she witnessed at the shrine of Fatima in Portugal where a young woman was healed.
