Lalow, 1935 from the collection of William B. Adair Art

Lalow, 1935

Pencil on paper

18 x 15 in

In the bottom left hand corner of this portrait, the word 'Lalow' has been inscribed. It is presumed that this is the name of the sitter, but as yet his exact identity is unknown. The portrait dates from the time that the Wileys were stationed in Moscow. We can speculate that the sitter was a diplomat, although it is difficult to ascertain his nationality.

The composition of this portrait is the earliest of its type among Irena Wiley's known works. The detailed focus on the face and hands in contrast to the lightly sketched shirt and necktie are of a style similar to other pieces in this collection — the portraits of Otto von Habsburg and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
