About the artist

Corneille (Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo)

Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922-2010), also known as "Corneille", was a painter and graphic artist born in Liege, Belgium. He is most known for his work in the CoBrA movement, which was a European expressionist group of artists who reverted to an innocent, childlike style in response to the brutality of World War II.

Although Corneille studied at the Amsterdam Academy of Art in 1940, he is mostly considered to be self-taught. His works often reimagine popular subject matter, such as bathers, nature, and animals, in a more abstracted, playful manner. His work is in the permanent collection of galleries across Europe and the United States, and was recently featured in the Villanova University Gallery of Art's 2025 exhibition, "The Unrefined Line: CoBrA's Rebellion in the Collection".
