About the artist

Ralph Gibson

American

b. 1939

Ralph Gibson (1939-) is an American photographer based in California. Born into a family immersed in the Hollywood film scene, Gibson began his professional photography journey as an assistant to Dorothea Lange and later worked with filmmaker Robert Frank and musician Lou Reed. Gibson also studied at the San Francisco Art Institute after his service in the US Navy.

Known for his surrealist black-and-white photographs, Gibson published several photographic books with comprehensive narratives. His work often utilizes visual contrast and juxtaposition to enliven inanimate objects. In 2019, Gibson was inducted into the Photography Hall of Fame.
