About the artist

Jacques de Gheyn

Dutch

1565-1629

Jacques de Gheyn (1565–1629) was a Dutch painter and engraver born in Antwerp. His work reflects the transition from Northern Mannerism to Dutch realism. Trained by Jacob de Gheyn and Hendrik Goltzius, de Gheyn received his first major commission from Prince Maurits to create an engraving of the Siege of Geertruidenberg. He continued to produce numerous paintings and engravings for Dutch royalty throughout his career.
