Sigmund Abeles

American

b. 1934

Sigmund Abeles (born 1934) is an American printmaker, illustrator, painter, and sculptor. Born in New York City and raised in South Carolina, Abeles focuses on the expressive and psychological aspects of the human figure, often exploring themes related to the life cycle. After a 27-year teaching career at the University of New Hampshire, he now works full-time in his New York City and upstate New York studios. Abeles has received numerous grants and awards, and his work is part of major collections, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
